What we now know as lacrosse is a diluted, miniaturized, bastardized, and pansified version of an epic, ancient game played by various Native American nations, primarily east of the Mississippi River. All that one really needs to know about the modern game, however, is this. "Lacrosse is for sucks" and is played, for the most part, by male youths of European ancestry that can best be described as "punks" or "assholes." Linked below is a useful resource concerning the history of the game, the article portion of which concludes with an interesting statement about the relative purity of contemporary women's lacrosse.
