For the Football Fans
Is it just me, or are other people deeply amused by the fact that AP wants to disassociate itself from the BCS because they feel that the inclusion of their poll in the formula "harms the reputation of AP."
They want out because the whole thing is so contrived, weird, and stupid that it makes the participants look bad. Personally, I advocate a playoff of some kind for college football. Then again, I also advocate midgets in the NFL, so you can understand why the NCAA is knocking down my door looking for suggestions.

I agree about a playoff for college football. If the NCAA is able to manage championship playoffs for other sports they should be able to do it for football too.
And yes, I know that could make me unpopular with the male readers here who love their 30 some odd bowl games every winter. However, I would have to say, you would still be able to enjoy as many games, just think of it as January Madness instead of March Madness. A whole month of playoff football as it should be played. And for those Domers out there, this may be your chance at a championship title without having to affiliate with a conference. Although (duck cheap shot coming) first they have to get the coaching staff and team back up to snuff.
Speaking of the happy bowl season, I would like to add GO BGSU! They are playing in the GMAC Bowl this evening.
NJ
Allow me to be the first to disagree on this one with the lovely NJ.
The bowl system works great for what it is: a reason to travel over the holidays, sell newspapers/magazines, and drum up interest in what is now essentially the AAA NFL. No offence to the CFL or the World League. As long as you remember it is that, and don't go wondering about who *really* is #1, it's all good.
I understand why the media wants a playoff. Bracketology makes the type so much easier. Plus, at the end of the year, you get a free weekend somewhere warm to cover a game like the Super Bowl. To a lesser extent, I see why the casual fan likes it for the same reason. Plus, it focuses on a few national games, as opposed to many many regional games...and Notre Dame. =)
But, for us hard-core single team fans, there's little upside. Unless, of course, your team is the ONE out of what, like 120? We love college football because it is an entire regular season of playoff atmosphere. Ask Fichigan, who screwed up once in September...heh...and are now a non-issue. With a playoff, they damn well may win the thing.
Plus, any play-off takes the major decision making away from the Conferences and into the Hands of the NCAA. No F'n' way that's gonna happen.
Plus, we WON'T be getting a 64 team tournament a la hoop. Actually, I think 50odd teams make bowls, so it's kinda like basketball already. No, what we'll likely GET is something like the lower divisions. My memory's a little fuzzy, but, once upon a time I was a Div. III football recruit, and I seem to remember it goes something like this. Ten game regular season, sixteen team playoff, four per region, seeded by RPI like index. Does that sound like fun to any of you?
Maybe it does, but not to me. In a situation like that, no way a small school gets in, no way can we have the mega-conferences we have today (nine team leagues, tops), and an even cheeser schedule for the major powers. Thanks but no thanks.
One thing I hated in HS about hoops, and my sister about softball, was that only 1 group of seniors was allowed to go out on a victory. In the current situation, nearly HALF of all the teams get to go to someplace warm (or Boise, Memphis, or Dallas), and almost a quarter of the senior major college football seniors get to end their careers with a victory.
Who's #1? Shoot, in this age of 'parity' and 'any given Saturday' who can know, and who really cares.
Unless it's ND.
=)
Who doesn't NEED or WANT a conference. Nat'l Schedule, baby!
=D
Oh, and IMHO, the BCS was better with all the computer polls that factored all the margin of victory, and the only real tweak needed for that was to make the SID, er, I mean *coaches* votes public. Then again, if we learned anything from March, it's that 1 vs. 2 is an illusion and a pipe dream.
The above was mine, as if the wording didn't give me away.
