Paul Berman Lives In My Head
From Terror and Liberalism , and referring to left/liberal opponents of the first Gulf War:
Opposition was instinctive for them. They worried about America's imperial motives, about the greed of big corporations and their influence on White House policy; and could not get beyond their worries. War, to them was always the Vietnam War, a debacle in the making.
Sarah and I have had this exact conversation about the early opponents of Gulf 2.
I'm loving this book. He's moved on from that point and now is trying to find the roots of modern Islamic terrorism. He's been comparing Islamism (the violent, aggressive brand of thought that leads to terrorism) to fascism and communism in the early twentieth century. It's just another totalitarian idea, not so different from what the world has seen before.
